A South Charlotte condo fire is currently under investigation. Authorities say the fire was not an accident but an intentional act.
South Charlotte Condo Fire Set on Purpose
The Charlotte Fire Department determined that the fire at the Sharon Place Condominiums on Friday night was not accidental. The blaze broke out shortly before 6:30 p.m. at the complex on Sharon Road West.
Due to the size of the fire and the challenging hot weather conditions, firefighters quickly issued a second alarm. The fire was controlled in 51 minutes, but not before it damaged eight units.
The Aftermath
During the rescue efforts, firefighters saved a woman from the second floor. She was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, her survival is uncertain. While her identity and current condition have not been officially released, neighbors describe her as a woman in her 80s with pre-existing health issues.
Residents recounted the chaotic scene. Linda Coccia described the rescued woman as kind but private, always greeting her neighbors. Lucas Souva spoke of the panic as smoke alarms blared and pets needed to be evacuated.
Firefighters faced additional challenges due to the hot weather and the heavy protective gear they wore. The gear, which can weigh about 50 pounds and includes three layers of protection, was especially challenging.
Battalion Chief Eric Withers explained that paramedics were on standby to assist firefighters with rehydration and medical care as necessary. After using their second air cylinder, firefighters underwent a rehabilitation process involving hydration and medical checks before resuming their duties.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
The Charlotte Fire Department announced on Saturday morning that the fire was set intentionally, though the investigation is still ongoing.
