Harborview license plate readers have been installed at the community’s entrances, monitoring all vehicles passing through. Despite a majority of residents voting in favor of the new security measure, privacy concerns remain.
Harborview License Plate Readers: Safety vs. Privacy
Three Harborview license plate readers (LPRs) now monitor the neighborhood’s entrances, a decision made after a pool-area shooting sparked discussions on safety. Residents pushed for the installation, and more than 70% of voters supported the initiative.
In just two weeks of partial operation, the LPRs provided video evidence to assist police with a recent car break-in investigation. Supporters believe the system could enhance safety and deter crime.
However, some residents raised concerns about privacy and data access. While the management company controls the data, residents can opt-out by notifying the HOA to exclude their vehicles from the system.
Community organizers hope this initiative will inspire other neighborhoods to adopt similar security measures, balancing safety and privacy.
