The Dockside condo evacuation is underway after officials deemed the building unsafe. Due to serious structural risks, residents must leave immediately.
Dockside Condo Evacuation Expands to Townhomes
The Dockside Association Board hired an engineering firm to assess the building’s structural integrity. The evaluation found that the floors could not support current loads, making the structure unsafe for occupancy. On February 26, residents were informed of the evacuation order and given a deadline to leave.
Initially, only the tower residents were required to evacuate. However, city officials later expanded the order to include adjacent townhomes. The board emphasized that resident safety remains the top priority.
The Dockside tower, built in the 1970s, contains 112 units, most of which are occupied full-time. Residents were seen packing personal belongings, with friends helping them move out. Large furniture removal is prohibited, and residents were advised to take perishables.
Officials stated that the building’s concrete slabs are severely overstressed and cannot safely support occupancy without major structural reinforcement. This issue follows a previous city order in March 2023, which required repairs to support columns and emergency systems. After those fixes, the building was considered safe, but new concerns have emerged.
City officials plan to reassess the structural capacity once all residents have vacated.
