A carbon monoxide leak in condos on Jefferson Street led to emergency evacuations and a fire department response. Authorities identified the cause and treated one person at the scene.
Carbon Monoxide Leak in Condos Caused by Basement Equipment
Roanoke Fire-EMS responded to reports of a carbon monoxide leak at a condo building on Jefferson Street. The incident occurred near the intersection of Campbell Avenue, prompting immediate evacuations.
Officials found dangerously high carbon monoxide levels in the basement, registering at 500 ppm. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that exposure above 150 to 200 ppm can be deadly.
A man cleaning the building admitted to using a gas-powered pressure washer in the basement. Fire officials determined that fumes traveled up a shaft, causing the leak.
Emergency Response and Medical Treatment
Firefighters quickly located the source of the carbon monoxide and worked to ventilate the building. One person received medical treatment at the scene but did not require hospitalization.
After securing the area and ensuring safety, firefighters cleared the scene. Residents were later allowed to return to their homes.
