A large Hampton condo fire on Friday injured four people and forced all 20 residents to evacuate. Fire crews battled strong winds and structural collapse before putting out the flames. Officials are still investigating the cause.
Hampton Condo Fire Causes Major Damage and Injuries
The Hampton condo fire started around 12:26 p.m. in a six-unit community near Island Cove Court. Firefighters arrived to find smoke in front and heavy flames in the back. Waterfront winds helped the fire spread rapidly.
As the blaze intensified, part of the building’s roof and structure collapsed. It took crews nearly three hours to contain the fire, which was declared out at 3:38 p.m. Crews stayed on-site to monitor hot spots and apply foam to prevent flare-ups.
Two residents were hospitalized, including one rescued by firefighters. Two firefighters were also taken to the hospital with injuries. All 20 residents were displaced. Twelve have asked the Red Cross for temporary help.
The building’s stability is being monitored to assist investigators. Fire officials believe that foul play is unlikely, but they are still investigating the cause.
