A dispute with the builder put a Kernersville homeowner at odds with his HOA after he displayed a sign in his truck.
Dispute With Builder Sparks HOA Violation Notice
The issue started when Tom Campbell moved into his new home last year. Although he faced some problems with the house, most were fixed over time. However, he later placed a message in his truck window encouraging others to ask about his home-buying experience.
The sign caught the builder’s attention, leading to a complaint. Soon, the homeowners association got involved. The HOA informed Campbell that the sign violated community rules. Campbell, unaware of any such restriction, questioned the claim.
The association maintained that the sign was against neighborhood guidelines. Campbell argued that it was simply a sunshade with words and did not contain offensive language.
Fines Pile Up Over HOA Enforcement
The situation escalated when Campbell received a formal violation notice. The HOA warned him that failing to remove the sign would result in daily fines of $100. Over time, these fines accumulated to approximately $4,000.
After the issue gained attention, the HOA reconsidered its stance. Following an inquiry from a local news station, the association dropped the violations and canceled the fines, acknowledging that Campbell was not responsible for the charges. The sign was eventually removed, bringing the dispute to an end.
